The idea for the mascot came from Argentine cartoonist Lorenzo Mollas, who, in Popeye, saw Flamengo's strength and resilience, as well as its evident connection with the sea. However, such a mascot was never very popular among the club's fans. Sailor Popeye (Image: Reproduction) +Stanley Cup at R$ 120.00. Hot drinks during the Mengão 90' Festival! CHANGES IN URUBU In the 1960s, competitive fans referred to Flamengo fans as “vultures,” a racist reference to a large group of poor black and white fans and people of African descent. It was only on May 31, 1969 that Flamengo fans accepted such a bad reputation. It was on Saturday, when the red and black fan decided to take the bird to the match between Flamengo and Botafogo, at Maracanã. At the time, the two clubs held the biggest competitive classic since Garrincha. And Flamengo hasn't beaten its opponent in four years. In the stands, Botafogo fans, as always, shouted that Flamengo was a “wolf” team. Black-and-white artist Henfil attempted to humanize his sports cartoons in newspapers and magazines, and the Vulture became a popular mascot.
