Gems from Vasco and Flamengo's academy face each other in the Rio under-20 final
Two promising young players are attracting attention in Rio's under-20 squad. They are midfielder João Pedro Murilo, from Vasco, and defender Cleiton, from Flamengo. João Pedro, or JP as he is known, was originally a midfielder, but recently started wearing Cruz-Maltino's number 10 shirt. 17 years old was in the 2022 season (40 games, 6 goals and 11 assists) and played in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Junior for Vasco this season, when he was promoted to the under-20s. This season, the midfielder has played 10 games – nine as a starter – and three assists for the under-20s. The player comes from the great improvements he made to the Vasco base. In 2021 they beat the Rio under-17s, scoring two goals in the tournament. In 2022, he was leader of the Copa Rio U-17. The 18-year-old midfielder was essential for the team to secure a place in the final. JP scored his first goal for Vasco in the first round of the tournament, in the 2-1 victory over Botafogo. Cleiton, on the other hand, is well known among red and black fans. Already playing for the professional team since last season, the striker reinforces the team's base whenever necessary, to continue with strength. Constantly praised by coaches, the striker recently received suggestions to leave Flamengo, but the club did not reach an agreement. The last time he was registered as a professional was at Ñublense-CHI, for the Copa Libertadores, on May 24th. In the Carioca U20 Championship, the striker has already scored three goals in the tournament. The Carioca U20 Championship finals take place over the next two weekends. The first game will be on Saturday (8), at 10am, in Gávea. The return is scheduled for the 15th, at 3 pm, in São Januário.
