However, every day, the debate on the legalization of gambling in Brazil finds new chapters, with many in favor and others against, alongside gambling in the country.
Meanwhile, online casinos are still going strong, all without breaking the law, as since December 2018, online games can be played while in Brazil, thanks to the law approved by then president Michel Temer.
However, it is worth mentioning that when operating over the internet in Brazil, companies do not pay their fees and taxes in the country, which leaves a lot of room for revenue.
The sources of revenue are the places where companies license, even for a Brazilian player who runs his games over the internet.
Changing this requires regulation and physical access to casinos. This is expected to happen in the near future, but the issue continues to generate mixed reactions.
In fact, the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill seeking legalization, but the Senate responded by creating the Parliamentary Front for a Brazil without Games, seeking to ban gambling with money in the country.
Online gaming and betting are profitable. Casinos are all over the world, whether physical or online.
According to Grand View Research, a business consultancy, the number of bettors is expected to grow at an annual rate of 11.7% until 2030, and their revenues are estimated at 182 billion dollars.
A good example of how gaming makes a lot of money is Macau, the only place in China where gambling is legal. In April of this year, however, they had their worst performance, raising US$335 million.
To get an idea of how Brazil might spend the money, we asked federal deputy Herculano Passos (MDB-SP), one of the defenders of the liberal law, and Poder 360, on YouTube. In the interview, he said he hopes to generate 650,000 new jobs and R$20 billion in annual revenue for the country with potential for gambling.
According to him, the idea is to imitate Las Vegas, where gambling represents 30% of total revenue, in addition to also mirroring Macau.
How can the law reach Brazil? Based on the bill approved in the Chamber of Deputies, we can have an idea of the possibility of the operation in Brazil. Firstly, it is important to highlight that companies can enter the country as casinos in resorts, subject to certain conditions.
Among them are corporate limits according to the population of each country. This way, São Paulo will be able to have three units; Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais have two each; in some states and in the Federal District in one.
Each establishment must comply with regulations, such as restaurants, retail stores, conference rooms, and large rooms. Fees and taxes are still unknown, but they must follow the way companies charge fees, and bettors only pay taxes after making a profit that must be explained.
So these are some of the questions that have been raised, but everything can still be resolved. It is necessary to approve new measures so that it can be turned into law in 2023, following a new elected leadership.
