An API for developers discovered in the testing version of Android 16 shows that Gemini will now be able to work within applications, expanding its capabilities and functionalities.

The feature is called “app functions” and is described on Google's developer area page as “a specific piece of functionality that an app provides to the system and can be connected to various features of the operating system.” Although the description is still somewhat vague, a practical example found on the Android Authority website helps you understand the capabilities of this new feature.

A simple example would be ordering food: instead of opening a specific app for this, Gemini will understand what the user wants and place the order directly, an app suited to the task they choose.

This extended integration will allow AI to manage diverse daily tasks, automate actions that currently require direct user intervention, and make smartphone use more agile and practical.

Apple is developing a similar feature for the iPhone, but it's not expected to launch until 2025. It remains to be seen when Google plans to make this functionality available to users, but we expect this new feature to arrive soon.
